Present subjunctive
The subjunctive is the mood of dependence: the verb is attached to something that comes before it, such as "must", "want", "it is better" or "so that". It always follows the particle të. Since Albanian has no infinitive, a subjunctive form does the work of English "to go", "to read": dua të lexoj is literally "I want that I read".
How it is formed
In classes 1 to 4, unë, ne, ju and ata/ato are identical to the present indicative. Only ti and ai/ajo change:
- ti = the unë form + -sh, often with a linking vowel: -ësh.
- ai/ajo = the unë form + -ë, which becomes -jë after a vowel.
The tables below show the form after të.
| Class 1 punoj | Class 2 dal | Class 3 ha | Class 3 fle | Class 4 eci | |
| unë | të punoj | të dal | të ha | të fle | të eci |
| ti | të punosh | të dalësh | të hash | të flesh | të ecësh |
| ai, ajo | të punojë | të dalë | të hajë | të flejë | të ecë |
| ne | të punojmë | të dalim | të hamë | të flemë | të ecim |
| ju | të punoni | të dilni | të hani | të flini | të ecni |
| ata, ato | të punojnë | të dalin | të hanë | të flenë | të ecin |
Class 5: irregular verbs
The ti and ai/ajo forms of dua and them are not built from the unë form:
| jam | kam | dua | them | |
| unë | të jem | të kem | të dua | të them |
| ti | të jesh | të kesh | të duash | të thuash |
| ai, ajo | të jetë | të ketë | të dojë | të thotë |
| ne | të jemi | të kemi | të duam | të themi |
| ju | të jeni | të keni | të doni | të thoni |
| ata, ato | të jenë | të kenë | të duan | të thonë |
Class 6: no change at all
Class 6 verbs are the exception to the ti and ai/ajo rule: they keep their present-indicative forms after të.
| zgjohem | nisem | |
| unë | të zgjohem | të nisem |
| ti | të zgjohesh | të nisesh |
| ai, ajo | të zgjohet | të niset |
| ne | të zgjohemi | të nisemi |
| ju | të zgjoheni | të niseni |
| ata, ato | të zgjohen | të nisen |
When to use it
1. After modal verbs
Mund "can, may" and duhet "must" do not change for person; the subjunctive after them carries the person:
- Duhet të punoj sot. "I must work today."
- Mund të vijmë nesër. "We can come tomorrow."
See Modals and verb phrases for the full picture, including verbs such as filloj "begin" and vazhdoj "continue": Filloj të punoj. "I am beginning to work."
2. After verbs of wanting, asking and ordering
After verbs such as dua "I want", uroj "I wish", urdhëroj "I order", kërkoj "I ask", lejoj "I allow" and ndaloj "I forbid", the subjunctive is obligatory; the indicative cannot replace it:
- Dua të flas. "I want to speak."
- Nuk dua që ai të hapë derën. "I do not want him to open the door."
3. After impersonal expressions
Expressions such as është mirë "it is good", është e vështirë "it is difficult", është e nevojshme "it is necessary" are followed by the subjunctive:
- Është mirë të flesh shumë. "It is good to sleep a lot."
- Është më mirë të mos flasim. "It is better that we do not talk."
- Është e vështirë të flasësh shpejt. "It is difficult to speak fast."
4. After conjunctions
The subjunctive follows që "that, so that", me qëllim që "in order that", and time conjunctions like kur "when", pasi "after", para se "before", sa herë që "whenever", when the action has not happened yet. For a habitual or already completed action, the present indicative is used after the same word.
5. Questions and exclamations
Alone, without a verb before it, the subjunctive asks what to do, or expresses protest or surprise:
- Ku të shkojmë? "Where shall we go?"
- Unë të mos shkoj? "That I should not go?" (an indignant "What do you mean, I should not go?")
6. Suggestions and wishes: le të
For "let him", "let them", "let us", the subjunctive follows le: Le të hamë. "Let's eat." Le të punojë ai. "Let him work." A wish without le can also be a subjunctive, as in Të jesh mirë! "May you be well!" (the optative is the mood made for wishes).
Negation
Mos goes after të: të mos shkojmë "that we do not go", Dua të mos flas. "I want not to speak."
Watch out: the subjunctive is also what a future is built from (do të + subjunctive), and the imperfect with të in front is the imperfect subjunctive, used when the verb that governs it is in the past: Dua të flas becomes Doja të flisja. See Past subjunctives.
