Future perfect and future in the past
Besides the plain future and conditional, the particle do combines with the perfect forms to make three more tenses. Together they cover what will have happened, what must have happened, and what was going to happen from a point in the past.
The three forms
| Form | Built from | Example (punoj) |
| Future perfect | do të + the subjunctive of kam + participle | do të kem punuar |
| Future past perfect | do të + the imperfect of kam + participle | do të kisha punuar |
| Future imperfect | do të + the imperfect | do të punoja |
Class 6 verbs use jam: do të jem larë, do të isha larë.
| Future perfect punoj (kam) | Future perfect lahem (jam) | |
| unë | do të kem punuar | do të jem larë |
| ti | do të kesh punuar | do të jesh larë |
| ai, ajo | do të ketë punuar | do të jetë larë |
| ne | do të kemi punuar | do të jemi larë |
| ju | do të keni punuar | do të jeni larë |
| ata, ato | do të kenë punuar | do të jenë larë |
Future perfect: will have done
1. Finished before a future moment
The future perfect describes an action that will be complete before some later point in the future. It is used rarely in Albanian, mostly when the order of two future events must be made clear:
- Nesër në mbrëmje do të kem mbaruar punën. "Tomorrow evening I will have finished the work."
- Kur të vish, do të kem mbaruar. "When you come, I will have finished."
2. A probability about the past
More often, the future perfect expresses the speaker's supposition that something has already happened. It works like the perfect subjunctive with mund, and corresponds to English "must have", "I suppose he has":
- A do të ketë ardhur ai? "I wonder whether he has come."
- Do të ketë fjetur. "He must have slept."
Future past perfect: must have, in the past
Do të kisha + participle has the same form as the perfect conditional. As a "probability" tense it says that something must have happened before a past moment:
- Do të kishte fjetur. "He must have been asleep (at that time)."
Whether do të kisha shkuar means "I would have gone" (a perfect conditional) or "I must have gone" is decided by the context.
Future imperfect: the future seen from the past
Do të + the imperfect, the same form as the conditional, also expresses what was going to happen from a moment in the past. It appears mostly in reported speech after a verb of saying, thinking or hoping in the past:
- Ai më tha se do të vinte nesër. "He told me that he would come tomorrow."
The speaker's original words were in the future (Do të punojmë "We will work"); after a past verb the future moves back to do të punonin "they would work".
| do të + imperfect | Meaning |
| as the main clause of an "if" sentence | conditional: Po të vinte, do të punonim. "If he came, we would work." |
| in reported speech after a past verb | future in the past: Tha se do të punonim. "He said that we would work." |
Watch out: all three of these forms are rare in speech. If you only need the basic ideas, the future, the present perfect and the conditional are enough to express "will", "has done" and "would".
