Future
The Albanian future is built from three words: the particle do, the particle të, and the present subjunctive of the verb. Do never changes, so the person and number come entirely from the verb after it: do të shkoj "I will go", do të shkojë "he will go".
How it is formed
Take the present subjunctive (the form after të) and put do in front. Everything said about the subjunctive for each conjugation class therefore applies unchanged.
| Class 1 punoj | Class 2 dal | Class 3 fle | Class 5 jam | Class 6 zgjohem | |
| unë | do të punoj | do të dal | do të fle | do të jem | do të zgjohem |
| ti | do të punosh | do të dalësh | do të flesh | do të jesh | do të zgjohesh |
| ai, ajo | do të punojë | do të dalë | do të flejë | do të jetë | do të zgjohet |
| ne | do të punojmë | do të dalim | do të flemë | do të jemi | do të zgjohemi |
| ju | do të punoni | do të dilni | do të flini | do të jeni | do të zgjoheni |
| ata, ato | do të punojnë | do të dalin | do të flenë | do të jenë | do të zgjohen |
The particle do comes from the verb dua "want", and the form do is still the ti and ai/ajo present of that verb. In the future it is just a marker.
Pattern by class: there is nothing to learn that the subjunctive has not already taught. Class 1 to 4 verbs change only in ti and ai/ajo (do të punosh, do të punojë); Class 6 verbs do not change at all (do të zgjohesh, do të zgjohet).
Negation
Nuk goes before do: Nesër nuk do të shkoj në shkollë. "Tomorrow I will not go to school."
When to use it
1. What will happen
The basic use is an action that will take place after the moment of speaking, with no stated end:
- Do të vij. "I will come."
- Nesër do të shkoj në shkollë. "Tomorrow I will go to school."
- Do të takohemi nesër. "We will meet tomorrow."
- Ata do të flenë. "They will sleep."
- Do të jesh i lumtur. "You will be happy."
2. A firm order or promise
In the second and third person the future often sounds like a command, firmer than the imperative itself, as in English "You will do as I say":
- Ti do të rrish këtu. "You will stay here."
3. "I have to": kam për të
The construction kam për të plus the participle says that something is to be done, with a sense of obligation or firm intention:
- Kam shumë për të bërë. "I have a lot to do."
In the Gheg dialects the same idea is kam me plus the infinitive. See participles for për të.
4. The present as a future
A present indicative with a future time word is also a future, and often more natural in speech: Nesër shkoj në shkollë. See Present indicative.
Related forms
- Future perfect: do të kem punuar "I will have worked".
- Conditional: do të punoja "I would work". Same do të, but with the imperfect.
Watch out: after kur, pasi, sa herë që and po (if), a future event is expressed with the plain subjunctive, not with do: the do belongs to the main clause only. See Conditional and if-sentences.
